Several years ago clients with HIV/AIDS talked intently about the effect diet was having on their general health, and how different they felt depending on what they were eating or drinking. One of the prime topics was grapefruit juice. This was one of the best examples of how clients, listening carefully to their own experiences, led medical practitioners to new discoveries. Grapefruit juice interfered with the metabolism of HIV medications, and clients quickly passed this information along to their friends.

We're having the same experience with Hepatitis C. Clients who attend the monthly Hep C support group learn things their doctors cannot tell them, medication side-effects, symptoms, and quirky but useful responses. A case manager and HCV nurse facilitate the group, but at the end of each session, they have learned as much as the clients, sometimes more.

This is the way we prefer to operate at the Health Project. We learn from each other, take the lead of our clients, and regularly look for other agencies and specialists who can help us provide the best possible services to anyone who comes through the door. If you have a skill to offer, or you just want to volunteer occasionally, give us a call. Our door is always open.

The United States spends more than any other nation in the world on health care - in 2007 we spent $2.2 trillion. Despite consistent increases in spending, disparities among demographic groups persist. Low-income Americans and racial and ethnic minorities experience disproportionately higher rates of disease, fewer treatment options, and reduced access to care. With unemployment on the rise, the disparities already apparent among these groups will continue to increase. It is vital that health reform reduces costs to make health care affordable; protects a patient's choice of doctors, hospitals, and insurance plans; invests in prevention and wellness; and assures quality, affordable health care for all Americans.
